Tribute to ‘adored son’ killed in motorway crash

The family of a man who died in a motorway crash has paid tribute to an "adored son, brother, and friend" who "lit up" every room.

Joshua Houghton, 21, from Devon, was killed in a single-car crash on the M48 at approximately 02:30 BST on Saturday 1 November.

Officers and paramedics attended the incident in the early hours of the morning, but Mr Houghton, the driver and a Royal Marine Commando, was pronounced dead at the scene.

"He was afraid of nothing, and his bold and enterprising skills were always at the forefront of everything he did, and he was always there to support his friends," his family wrote, in a tribute released on Tuesday.

"With a smile for everyone and every situation, his love of life was infectious, and no outing was complete without some high adventure," Mr Houghton's family wrote.

They added that he "found his true calling" when he joined the Royal Marines.

Mr Houghton was made a Royal Marine Commando in July, and stationed at 42 Commando, near Plymouth.

"The four key words that the Royal Marines use to describe the personalities of those who dedicate their lives to protecting those in need, are: courage, determination, cheerfulness, and unselfishness.

"These four words sum up just what made Joshua tick," the tribute read.

"Joshua was someone who saw the good in everyone, and no matter what he faced, it was always with his massive smile and sense of humour."

"He has left a gigantic hole in the lives of so many people, but also a legacy of human warmth, compassion and a deeply caring nature that will continue to be felt by everyone who knew him."

The family said Joshua's funeral will take place at the church in the village of Lympstone, in Devon, described as "the spiritual home of the Royal Marines".
