Traffic was halted on a stretch of the M60 tonight (Saturday) after a van was engulfed by flames.

The white van caught fire on the anticlockwise stretch of the motorway near junction 23 for Ashton[1] and Audenshaw.

Pictures and video showed bright orange flames lapping up from the front portion of the vehicle.

Smoke could be seen billowing into the air as traffic initially passed the scene.

No one was hurt in the incident, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) confirmed.

The van was not an electric vehicle, they added.

A GMFRS spokesperson said: "Shortly after 7.15pm on Saturday (8 November), three fire engines from Blackley[3], Whitehall and Hyde[4] fire stations were called to attend a van fire on the M60[5] between junctions 22 and 23.

"Crews arrived quickly and used breathing apparatus, a hose reel and a thermal imaging camera to extinguish the fire.

"Firefighters made the area safe before departing after approximately one hour at the scene."
