M6 traffic RECAP: Major UK motorway brought to standstill in rush hour crash
Motorists are facing chaos on a major motorway this evening with traffic stopped due to an ongoing police incident. Emergency services, as well as Highways Officers, are in attendance on the northbound carriageway of the M6 between junction 20 for the M56 and junction 21 for the A57 Manchester Road. Live traffic service Inrix has reported that this is due to a collision, with police in attendance blocking off multiple lanes.
All traffic is being temporarily held. The update read: "All traffic being temporarily held and severe delays due to accident on M6 Thelwall Viaduct Northbound between J20 M56 J9 (Lymm Interchange) and J21 A57 Manchester Road (Woolston)."

Severe delays and tailbacks due to the earlier collision have now been cleared. In an update, traffic service Inrix posted: "Severe delays cleared, earlier accident on M6 Thelwall Viaduct Northbound between J20 M56 J9 (Lymm Interchange) and J21 A57 Manchester Road (Woolston)."

An update from National Highways states: "All vehicles have been moved out of live lane and all lanes are reopen on the #M6 northbound between J20 (#M56) and J21 (#Warrington) following a collision.
"There are 60 min delays above normal travel time following this incident so please allow time for these delays to clear."

National Highways has stated that two of four lanes on the M6 are closed due to a crash with long delays. It stated: "Lanes 3 & 4 (of 4) are closed on the #M6[1] in #Cheshire[2] northbound between J20 (#M56[3]) & J21 (#Warrington[4]) due to a collision.
Long delays of at least 60 minutes on approach & 6 miles of congestion. Please allow extra time for your journey. Thank you for your patience."
