The A50 eastbound has now been reopened, but drivers have still been warned to "expect delays". Motorists warn of severe delays

Motorists have taken to social media to warn others of the traffic, with one person saying the delays were lasting hours.

One traveller wrote on X: "Been stuck on the A50 for over two hours, sounds like a horrible accident." A second person said: "Took me an hour to get from Donington to Derby through Sawley."

Bus diversion announced

Bus operator Trentbarton confirmed a diversion for passengers heading to the airport. It announced on X: "Due to an accident.

The M1 and A50 around the airport have closed. Skylink Express are diverting via Kegworth to avoid the A50/M1 island."

Leicestershire Police shares update

Leicestershire Police has shared a traffic update, following reports that an invesgitation into the incident has been launched. The force posted on X: "Due to a road traffic collision the A50 is closed west bound from junction 24 and 24A of the M1, including junction 1 and 2 on the A50.

The A50 is also closed east bound from junction 2 to junction 1. Please find an alternative route. Updates to follow."

Diversions announced following closure

Diversions have been announced for motorists. The diversion for the westbound closure from the M1 to the A6 is as follows:

  • From M1 J24a, continue north on the M1 to J25 - 4.3 miles
  • Exit at J25 and follow the A52 westbound towards Derby - 5.2 miles
  • Join the A6 southbound towards Shardlow and rejoin the A50 westbound - 3.7 miles

The diversions for the eastbound closure from the A6 to J1 are as follows: Local diversion (for traffic between J2 and J1):

  • Follow local routes via Shardlow and Aston-on-Trent to rejoin the A50 at J1 (Cavendish Bridge).

Longer strategic diversion (for through traffic):

  • Follow the A6 northbound towards Derby - approximately 3.7 miles
  • Take the A52 eastbound towards the M1 - approximately 5.2 miles
  • Join the M1 southbound at J25, continuing to J24a to rejoin the A50 eastbound - approximately 4.3 miles

National Highways Traffic Officers are at the scene assisting with traffic management and road closures.

The road is expected to remain closed for several hours while work continues, according to National Highways. It said: "Due to the severity of the collision and the need for detailed police investigation work, the closures are expected to remain in place for several hours, likely throughout the morning."
