Live: M5 traffic at a standstill after six-vehicle crash near Bristol
Drivers faced major delays on the M5 near Bristol as traffic was at a standstill following a six-vehicle crash this evening (Thursday, November 27). Traffic was held on the southbound carriageway between junction 19 and 20 around 5.50pm. National Highways also warned drivers of four miles of tailbacks.
It said: "Traffic is being held on the #M5 southbound between J19 (#Portbury) and J20 (#Clevedon) due to a collision involving 4 cars. "@ASPolice @swasFT on scene. "Delays in excess of 30 minutes, approx.
4 miles of congestion." Roads and traffic monitoring site, Inrix, reported the crash at 6.05pm. It said: "All traffic being temporarily held and stationary traffic due to accident on M5 Southbound from J19 A369 Martcombe Road (Portishead) to J20 B3133 Ettlingen Way (Clevedon)."
At the time, traffic maps showed long queues on both sides of the motorway. A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police said: "Officers are at the scene of a six-vehicle collision on the M5 southbound between junctions 19 (Portishead) and 20 (Clevedon). "The collision was first reported at 5.40pm and the carriageway was initially fully closed while emergency services responded.
It has since reopened. "No serious injuries were reported." The road has since been reopened and traffic is clearing.
