Iveco S-Way CNG racks up over 1000 km on a single refill

Iveco S-Way CNG

Iveco's latest S-Way CNG has shown what a modern gas truck can do on long-haul work. During a summer test run, the truck covered more than 1000 km on a single refill of CNG in a bid to give a more realistic idea of its achievable range under load. The run was carried out by French journalists travelling from the Belgian border towards Spain.

The tractor pulled a loaded Krone curtainsider at 30 tonnes gross, providing a fair assessment of how the truck behaves under normal working conditions. The journalists highlighted the S-Way's comfortable ride and stable handling, supported by full air suspension and a revised steering column. Iveco's High-Performance Engine Brake and Intarder hydraulic retarder provided strong endurance braking, and they also noted the gas engine's smooth and responsive feel, with significantly less cab noise than a diesel.

On the 1000 km run, the truck averaged below 21 kg/100 km, and refuelling times remained practical for everyday operations. Power comes from FPT Industrial's xCursor 13 gas engine producing 500 bhp and 2200 Nm of torque. It is designed to meet future Euro 7 standards.

The second-generation ZF TraXon 12-speed automated gearbox and long rear axle ratio help keep revs low while maintaining torque. The latest 620-litre tanks provide 1240 litres (equivalent to at least 190 kg of CNG) - an 18% increase over the previous generation and a  72% improvement compared to the first Iveco CNG tractors introduced in 2011. Efficiency systems include predictive GPS that adapts speed and gearing to the terrain, plus energy-saving components such as a controlled alternator and disengageable air compressor.

Aerodynamic additions like mirror-cams and side fairings also reduce drag.

"This milestone perfectly embodies our commitment to sustainable transport that delivers both performance and profitability to our customers," said Iveco's Giandomenico Fioretti. "With over 1000 km on a single refill, the S-Way CNG sets a new benchmark for range, efficiency and comfort, proving once again that natural gas is a real alternative to diesel for long-haul transport, driving the decarbonisation of road freight."
