The M55 was shut down for several hours following the incident, reports Lancs Live[2].

A Lancashire Police spokesperson said: "Our thoughts are very much with the woman as she undergoes treatment in hospital.

"As officers investigate what happened, we are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision or has dashcam footage from that area of the motorway, to get in touch.

"Also, if you saw the pedestrian near to the carriageway prior to the collision, we also want to hear from you.

"The carriageway was closed for a time and this was to allow investigation work to be carried out.

"We know this impacted on other users of the motorway, however it is vital that such a serious collision is investigated fully."
