M62 UPDATES as motorway closed after man dies in police chase horror crash

The M62 has been closed today after a man in his 30s died when the car he was in smashed into a barrier during a police chase[1]. West Yorkshire Police[2] were involved in the chase with a black Mercedes which had failed to stop on the motorway at 12.52am. As the car attempted to take an exit slip road, it smashed into a barrier.

A man in his 30s, who was the sole occupant of the car, died at the scene. As a result of the fatal collision, the road has been closed and drivers are being warned to seek alternative routes. Follow our live blog for the latest updates...

M62 reopens

The M62 has reopened, National Highways confirmed.

They said in a statement: "The #M62 is now OPEN within J28 eastbound. "The J29 exit slip eastbound is also now OPEN along with access to the roundabout and #M1 north via the fast slip. "Thank you for your patience."

National Highways issue warning

National Highways issued a warning, saying: "Motorists are urged to plan their journeys accordingly as National Highways repairs damage to a lighting column on junction 29 roundabout of the M62, following a road traffic collision earlier.

"The eastbound carriageway of the M62 between junctions 28 and 29 was initially closed due to a road traffic collision overnight but is reopening. "The M62 eastbound exit slip road at J29, along with the roundabout, remains closed after a lighting column was damaged which will take some time to repair. "Surrounding routes are likely to remain busy throughout the day."

West Yorkshire Police said: "A mandatory referral has been made to the Independent Officer for Police Conduct who have declared this as an independent investigation."

Motorway set to be closed 'for some time'

This section of the M62 eastbound "will be closed for some time yet," the police added.

The force urged motorists to follow diversions and seek alternate routes.

Mercedes crashed into barriers during police chase

West Yorkshire Police have confirmed that the M62 eastbound has been closed after the fatal collision which took place during a police chase. In a statement the force said: "At around 12.52am a black Mercedes C220 failed to stop for police on the M62 eastbound and a pursuit was authorised. "A short time later, the vehicle collided with barriers when attempting to take the exit slip road at junction 29.

The sole occupant of the vehicle, a man in his 30s, died at the scene.

His next of kin have been infomed and will be offered specialist family liaison support."
