Lorry driver charged over deaths of Ryanair pilots in M62 crash
A lorry driver has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving after two Ryanair pilots were killed in a crash on the M62 last year. Captain Matt Greenhalgh, 28, and Senior First Officer Jamie Fernandes, 24, were travelling to Liverpool John Lennon Airport in a taxi when the collision occurred. Sadly, the pair both died at the scene while the taxi driver sustained serious injuries.
The collision - involving two lorries and a taxi on the westbound carriageway of the M62 between junction 8 and junction 7 - happened at around 5.31am on Thursday, July 11 last year. Anthony Burns, 63, from Headington Road, Upton[1], Wirral[2], has now been charged with two counts of causing death by dangerous driving and one of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He has been summonsed to appear at Warrington[3] Magistrates on November 25.
Following the incident, tributes to both Mr Fernandes and Mr Greenhalgh poured in on social media.
An online fund-raiser set up to pay for their funerals and support their families raised more than ?40,000.
