Black Isle retired lorry driver (83) almost crashed after misjudged triple-overtake

Inverness Sheriff Court. Inverness Sheriff Court.

A RETIRED lorry driver with over 60 years of unblemished motoring blotted his copybook last year, when he misjudged an overtake and almost crashed head-on into another car on the A835 near Ullapool. Inverness Sheriff Court watched dashcam footage from the oncoming car which showed 83-year-old David Henderson of Braefindon, Culbokie successfully pass two cars on the A835 road, two miles south of Ullapool -- but there was not enough room for him to pull in behind the third vehicle. The video showed Sheriff David Mackie that Henderson had to continue his manoeuvre and sharply pull in in front of a Citroen with the help of the other oncoming car braking hard and come to a stop to prevent a crash.

Henderson was originally charged with dangerous driving but the pensioner tendered a plea of guilty to the lesser charge of careless driving. His lawyer, John MacColl said: "He knows this road very well. There were two slow moving vehicle in front of him but the gap between him and the third was smaller than he thought."

He pleaded with the court not to ban his client from driving due to his clean driving record and health issues which required travel for regular medical visits.

Henderson was fined GBP510 and had his licence endorsed with six penalty points.
