Woman, 89, dies after being hit by council bin lorry

An 89-year-old woman has died following a crash involving a council bin lorry in Llandudno. The collision between the lorry and the pedestrian happened in Brookes Street, just off Caroline Street, at around 9am on Monday morning.
The driver of the vehicle has since been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He was in police custody this evening (September 1).
The incident sparked a heavy emergency services presence in the quiet residential area including from the Air Ambulance, the Welsh Ambulance Service and North Wales Police.
Despite their efforts, the woman died at the scene, police confirmed.
Sergeant Duncan Logan of the serious collision investigation unit told the public the force was appealing for witnesses to come forward, North Wales Live reports.[1]
He said: "The lady's next of kin have been informed and are being supported by officers, and our thoughts and sympathies are very much with them at this incredibly difficult time.
"The investigation is underway and I can confirm that a man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and he remains in police custody."

He added: "I would urge anybody who may have been in the vicinity of Brookes Street around the time of the collision and who may have information that could assist the investigation to contact us as soon as possible."

Earlier in the day, Conwy Council issued a statement explaining that one of its recycling lorries had been involved in a road traffic collision on Monday morning.
A spokesperson for the council said earlier: "We are aware of a serious incident in Llandudno this morning involving a recycling vehicle.
"The circumstances surrounding the incident are currently being investigated by North Wales Police[2], and the authority is assisting with the enquiries.
