Volvo Launches World-First Rolling Stop/Start for Trucks

Volvo Trucks is rolling out an updated version of its I-Roll technology, now with an added engine stop/start function - a first for heavy-duty trucks.
The feature is designed to save fuel and cut CO2 emissions, helping drivers and operators reduce both costs and environmental impact.
The new stop/start function works by using road and topography data to predict when the truck is heading into a downhill stretch.
At speeds above 60 kmh, the engine will automatically shut off while coasting, using no fuel during that time and producing zero tailpipe emissions.
"Our engineers have done it again - innovating a new engine technology that contributes to making transport by truck more fuel-efficient," said Jan Hjelmgren, head of product management at Volvo Trucks.
"As part of our decarbonization strategy, we will continue to innovate to make our combustion engines even better and to reduce our impact on the environment."
While the savings may seem small -- around one per cent on top of existing I-Roll benefits -- Volvo said it's another step in squeezing more efficiency out of every trip.
For operators running long-haul routes, those small percentages can add up to meaningful reductions in fuel bills over time.
The feature will be available on the Volvo FH and FH Aero models equipped with the 13-litre diesel engine, with customer orders opening in September 2025.
This stop/start update is part of Volvo's wider plan to decarbonise transport, which includes improving diesel technology alongside the rollout of battery-electric and fuel-cell trucks and engines designed for renewable fuels.
