A HGV lorry has collided with a bridge near a M60[1] motorway junction in Trafford[2] - causing major delays all afternoon. No-one has been injured as a result of the collision and there has been no structural damage to the bridge, Greater Manchester Police[3] (GMP) has confirmed.
Police first told motorists to avoid the area at around 11am today[4], Monday, September 1, following reports of a 'traffic incident'.
GMP has since confirmed that a HGV lorry collided with the Lostock Circle bridge on the M60[5], near the Trafford Centre.

Long queues have been building up on the M60 near J9 all day following the incident, with traffic expected to return to normal at around 4pm, according to current estimates by National Highways.

One eye witness described the scene as 'absolute chaos'. He said: "At the M602 near the Trafford Centre a lorry's hit a bridge and crashed into it.
All the motorway's been closed down, it's absolute chaos.
There's traffic everywhere, all coming off the motorway."
He said it was 'utter chaos' as there were 10 mile queues of cars coming off the motorway and spilling into Urmston[7] and Stretford[8].

GMP said at around 11am that officers were in attendance at an incident in Urmston this morning, close to the junction of Lostock Road and the M60, at junction nine.
The police were urging drivers to avoid the area if possible as heavy traffic began building up on the M60 clockwise approaching junction nine, with queues tailing back to junction seven at Sale[9].
