Upper Parliament Street closed for more than two hours after lorry crash

A cordon was in place on a major Nottingham city centre road due to a "fuel spillage" after a lorry was involved in a crash. Three fire engines were called to Upper Parliament Street[1] after a lorry crashed into a bollard, causing the vehicle's tank to burst[2]. As firefighters attempted to clean up the spillage and stop it leaking into the sewers, Upper Parliament Street was closed between Victoria Centre[3] and South Sherwood Street from around 3.30pm this afternoon (Tuesday, September 16).
A small area of the path outside the Tesco Express and Greggs stores was also taped off by the fire service. An environmental protection unit was at the incident, which was causing buses to divert. Bus operator Trentbarton[4] confirmed the road closure caused diversions to its Calverton service.
In a statement posted to X, the transport company said: "Due to a fuel spillage on Upper Parliament Street, buses will terminate at Victoria Bus Station and restart on Mansfield Road opposite the Rose of England pub". Nottingham City Transport[5] had also confirmed "severe disruption to all services, with delays and alternative stops in use" in a statement on X earlier. The road had reopened by around 6.15pm this evening.
