Thames Freeport launches AI and 5G lab to accelerate port innovation

Developed in partnership with DP World London Gateway, the Port of Tilbury, and Ford Motor Company Dagenham, the Lab will deliver a 10-week programme that connects startups with industry leaders. Thames Freeport has unveiled a new programme of global innovation partnerships designed to drive job creation, attract investment, and strengthen the UK's AI-driven growth agenda. In collaboration with L Marks, PUBLIC, MH&A, and Rainmaking, the initiative will support startups and technology firms developing advanced AI solutions for the ports and logistics sector.

At the heart of this effort is the Thames Freeport Connectivity Lab, led by L Marks and Cambridge Management Consulting. Powered by Verizon Business private 5G, the Lab will act as a testbed for AI, 5G, and smart infrastructure applications, helping to enhance operational efficiency and global competitiveness. Developed in partnership with DP World London Gateway, the Port of Tilbury, and Ford Motor Company Dagenham, the Lab will deliver a 10-week programme that connects startups with industry leaders.

Participants will gain mentorship, real-world testing opportunities, and access to networks that can accelerate adoption of their technologies. The programme will focus on key themes, including tracking and monitoring, maintenance and efficiency, and health, safety, and security. A wildcard category will also invite disruptive innovations with the potential to transform the sector.

This announcement follows last month's confirmation of a GBP200 million (£270.9 million) private-sector investment by London Thames Hydrogen to build a next-generation hydrogen-from-waste facility at the Tilbury Tax Site within Thames Freeport, further reinforcing the hub's role as a catalyst for sustainable and digital transformation.
