Major M4 delays after multi-vehicle crash

Drivers on the M4 motorway[1] faced several miles of tailbacks this afternoon, Tuesday, September 16, as two lanes were closed following a multi-vehicle crash. Traffic monitoring[2] site, Inrix, reported at 2.25pm: "Two lanes closed and queueing traffic due to recovery work and multi-vehicle accident on M4 eastbound J17 A350 (Chippenham) to J16 A3102 Swindon Road (Swindon West)." Meanwhile, AA Traffic News reported: "Severe delays of 34 minutes and delays increasing on M4 eastbound between M4 (Leigh Delamere Services) and J16 A3102 Swindon Road (Swindon West).

Average speed five mph." Maps showed traffic queueing for around four miles, between the Moto service station at Leigh Delamere, and the junction for Sutton Benger. There were also queues in every direction off the roundabout at Stanton St Quintin.

The crash had cleared, and traffic returned to normal on the motorway, by 3.45pm.
