M61 Bolton traffic held after 3 vehicle crash this morning

The incident took place on the M61 southbound between J4 Farnworth and J5 Westhoughton at just before 6.45am today. Police were called to the crash, which involved three vehicles, before traffic on the motorway was held to allow the vehicles to be moved onto the hard shoulder. A spokesperson for GMP said: "At around 6.40am this morning, officers received reports of a collision between three vehicles between junction 4 and 5 on the M61.

"No injuries have been reported."

Traffic began moving again after the crashed vehicles were moved onto the hard shoulder, but 50 minute delays remained. Traffic had been expected to return to normal not long after, but further delays were caused due to tailbacks from an incident on the A666[3].

The incident saw emergency services scrambled to the major Bolton road after a concern for welfare.
