A large stretch of the M60 was closed this morning following a police incident, sparking delays[1] for drivers at the height of rush hour[2]. Buses delayed by around 40 minutes

The Bee Network has announced an average wait time of 40 minutes for some bus services affected by this morning's M60 closure.

Due to a police incident resulting in the partial closure of the M60 between Sale and Carrington, some bus services are experiencing average delays of 40 minutes. Bus ticket acceptance is in place on selected metrolink services.

Hour-long delays still expected

Drivers can expect delays of at least an hour around Junction 6 and 8 of the M60 after it closed this morning. The closure was triggered by a police-led incident, with officers arriving on scene to deal with a "concern for welfare incident". Traffic is expected to clear shortly with the motorway now open.

The M60 has re-opened in both directions following its closure between Junction 6 and 8 this morning. National Highways said there are still delays of at least an hour in both directions, which should soon start to clear.

Bus services in Trafford have seen delays of up to 20 minutes following this morning's closure on the M60, according to the Bee Network. National Highways earlier warned travellers to plan ahead, saying: "If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. City centre routes blocked by 'very slow' traffic

Traffic is currently stretching back to junction 25 for Brinnington clockwise, and junction 12, Eccles Interchange, in the opposite direction, according to the traffic service Inrix. There are also delays on the M56 back to junction 7 for Bowdon, as well as "very slow" delays on all routes into the city centre from Stretford and Longsight.

A diversion is in place for clockwise traffic.

Drivers travelling clockwise are being told to follow the hollow square symbol signs and:

  • Leave the M60 clockwise at J6 by joining Carrington Spur slip road for 1.4km.
  • At M60 J7/A56, turn left onto A56 Cross Street southbound and follow for 2.2km.
  • At A56/A6144 Junction, turn right onto A6144 westbound "Harboro Road" and follow for 2.4km.
  • At A6144 (Carrington Lane/A6144 (Carrington Spur) junction, turn right onto A6144 (Carrington Spur) northbound and follow for 1.9km.
  • At A6144/M60 J8 roundabout, take first exit and rejoin the M60 clockwise at J8

Anti-clockwise traffic is being told to follow hollow square signs and:

  • Leave the M60 anti-clockwise at J8
  • At the M60 J8/A6144 Rbt, take the 2nd exit onto the A6144 south Carrington Spur
  • At A6144 (Carrington Spur) A6144 (Carrington Lane) Jct, turn left onto A6144 (Carrington Lane).

Then follow hollow circle signs and:

  • At the A6144/A56 junction continue straight onto the A6144 eastbound and follow for approx.

    2 miles.

  • At the A6144/M60 J6 Rbt, take the third exit to rejoin the M60 anti-clockwise.

Traffic service Inrix says those travelling near this morning's closure are facing "severe delays". Queues on the clockwise side stretch back to junction 25 for Brinnington in Stockport, while traffic goes as far back to junction 12 (Eccles Interchange) on the anti-clockwise side.
