M5 crash leaves man in hospital with police witness appeal

Devon and Cornwall Police are appealing for witnessess following two serious crashes on the M5 last night. The M5 is still closed both ways this morning and diversion routes are in place[1] via the A38 and A361. A crash, involving a Vauxhall Zafira, Ford[2] Ka and a Porsche Boxter, was the first of two serious collisions to take place on the motorway[3] between junctions 27 and 28 on Thursday night (September 18).

The male driver of the Ford Ka has been taken to hospital with serious injuries, Devon and Cornwall Police said. That was the first of two crashes on the stretch of motorway. A second, separate collision was reported near to Junction 28 at around 11.10pm.

Police in a statement said they will release further information on this in due course, as DevonLive reports.[4] Devon and Cornwall Police said: "Officers are appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage following a three-vehicle collision on the M5[5] near Willand in which a man was seriously injured. "Emergency services were called to the southbound carriageway of the motorway, near to Junction 28, at around 9.50pm on Thursday 18 September.

The collision involved a Vauxhall Zafira, a Ford Ka and a Porsche Boxter. The male driver of the Ford Ka was taken to hospital with serious injuries. "Anyone with any relevant information or dashcam footage is asked to contact police via our website or by calling 101, quoting log number 806 of 18 September.

"A second, separate collision was reported near to Junction 28 at around 11.10pm and we will release further information on this in due course. There are currently delays of around an hour approaching the closure in both directions. Nearby villages are gridlocked as people try and avoid the closed motorway[6][7]

National Highways said: "The M5 in Devon is closed both ways between J27 (Tiverton[8]) and J28 (Cullompton[9]) due to a serious road traffic collision. Devon & Cornwall Police remain on scene to undertake a collision investigation. "Two secondary incidents in the queue for the original incident have occurred meaning the road will likely remain closed throughout this morning."

Diversion Route

Southbound Road users are advise to follow the Solid Square diversion symbol on road signs.

• Leave the M5 at J27 and take the 1st exit onto the A38.
• Follow the A38 to the roundabout with the B3181 at Waterloo Cross and take the 2nd exit onto the B3181 southbound.
• Follow the B3181 southbound through Willand and back to the M5 J28 junction at Cullompton and rejoin the M5 southbound at

Northbound Road users are advise to follow the Hollow Diamond diversion symbol on road signs.

• Exit M5 at J28 (Cullompton).

• At the roundabout, join the B3181 northbound towards Willand.

• Continue on the B3181 through Willand and towards Sampford Peverell.

• At the junction with the A361, follow signs for Tiverton/Barnstaple.

• Use the A361 link road to rejoin the M5 northbound at J27.
