M25 closure RECAP: Huge section of major UK motorway closed after crash

A vehicle fire has resulted in part of the M25 being closed as firefighters battle to put out the blaze[1]. National Highways South East said the M25 in Surrey is closed anti-clockwise between J10 for the A3[2], Guildford and J8 Reigate due to a vehicle fire. "SurreyFRS are currently on scene alongside National Highways Traffic Officers," it added.

Drivers warned of congestion
Drivers have been warned to expect traffic and delays on the M25 this afternoon - despite all lanes re-opening. "There are 3 miles congestion following this incident so please allow time for delays to clear.
Thanks for your patience," National Highways said.

Five fire engines were sent to the M25 to tackle this afternoon's fire. A SFRS spokesperson said: "We received a call this morning around 11.55am to a report of a vehicle fire on the M25, between junctions 9 to 8, Leatherhead to Reigate. Five fire engines were sent alongside a water carrier and a specialist vehicle.
A detached trailer had caught fire. Police and Surrey Highways officers were also in attendance. "Crews tackled the fire and started to clear the scene around 13.40pm."

The M25 has fully reopened anti-clockwise between J10 (Guildford/A3) and J8 Reigate after a lorry fire earlier this afternoon.
Drivers are still facing around three miles congestion and will have to wait for the traffic to gradually clear.

An AA alert shows the congestion on the M25 ahead of the closure between J10 and J8 on the anti-clockwise carriageway. It states: "Severe delays of 16 minutes and delays easing on M25 anticlockwise between J11 A320 St Peters Way (Chertsey) and J10 A3 (Wisley Interchange). Average speed ten mph."
And for the otherside of the closure it also says: "Severe delays of 17 minutes and delays easing on M25 anticlockwise between J9 A243 (Leatherhead) and J8 A217 Brighton Road (Reigate). Average speed ten mph."

'Long delays' says Inrix on M25 due to lorry fire
Traffic monitoring site Inrix is reporting "long delays" across the M25 anticlockwise as the carriageway remains closed from J10 (for the A3, Guildford) and J8 (Reigate) due to a vehicle fire involving a HGV. As a result of this, there are delays of up to 30 minute on the M25 anticlockwise between junctions J11 (Chertsey) and J10 (Guildford). Inrix has said: "M25 anticlockwise closed, long delays due to lorry fire from J10 A3 (Wisley Interchange) to J8 A217 Brighton Road (Reigate).
Congestion to J11 (Chertsey), closed through to J8 for a suitable diversion. Stopped towards Gatwick since 11:55. Releasing two lanes of trapped traffic past now, but still closed from J10."

Surrey Fire Service and National Highways Traffic Officers are currently at the scene of the crash. "The M25 in Surrey is closed anti-clockwise between J10 (for the A3, Guildford) and J8 (Reigate) due to a vehicle fire involving a HGV," says National Highways.

The following diverted traffic is advised by National Highways:
- Exit the M25 anti-clockwise at J10
- Join the A3 northbound towards London
- At Tolworth, exit the A3 and join A240 Tolworth Interchange
- Take the 3rd exit at the roundabout and join the A240 towards Reigate
- Continue onto the A24 at Organ Junction
- At the A24 Ewell bypass roundabout, take the 1st exit onto the A240 towards Reigate
- At A240/A217 Burgh Heath junction, turn right at the traffic signals onto the A127 towards Reigate
- Follow the A217 towards the M25
- Re-join the M25 anti-clockwise at Reigate Hill Interchange
Details on delays
Traffic monitoring service Inrix said: "M25 clockwise entry slip road partially blocked, queueing traffic due to accident at J11 A320 St Peters Way (Chertsey). "Congestion to J10 (Wisley), and queues opposite back to J13 (Staines)."

The crash happened at the M25 clockwise at the junction 11 slip road near Chertsey.
There were around three miles of queues from the site of the incident.
One lane on the slip road shut as a result.

Delays were along the M25 following a traffic incident near Chertsey.
Autorities were first alerted to the fire at 8:43am this morning.
