Live: Car fire breaks out on M5

Two lanes of the M5 in Somerset were closed due to a vehicle fire this evening (Monday, September 29). There were long delays between junction 21 and 22 on the southbound carriageway of the motorway. One person said: "Car on hard shoulder southbound with sparks underneath and smoke coming from under bonnet." Another person said fire engines are on their way to the scene.

Traffic cameras show thick plumes of smoke billowing into the sky. There are also long tailbacks of traffic in all three lanes. Roads and traffic monitoring site, Inrix, reported the fire at 5.28pm.

It said: "Two lanes closed and queueing traffic due to vehicle fire on M5 Southbound from J21 A370 (Weston-super-mare) to J22 (Burnham-on-sea)."
