Around 60,000 people will be taking part in the AJ Bell Great North Run this Sunday, September 7

The city is set to welcome 60,000 runners this weekend who will descend upon Newcastle for the start of the Great North Run. Sunday's half-marathon, as previously reportedly[1], will also attract around 200,000 spectators eager to watch the action along its famous 13.1-mile route.
Organisers clearly always have a huge job on their hands to manage all the runners and visitors who add such a buzz to the event. The Great North Run is now in its 46th year so the team behind it are well practised in dealing with the crowds.
Our guide to September 7's run[2] shares everything that runners and spectators need to know on the day, along with plenty of information to help them with their own pre-planning.
It ranges from details of run dos and don't[3]s to start procedures; the medal they are set to receive[4] and best viewing spots for spectators[5] - which include a new city centre big screen option this year[6] - while we also bring additional details of key points to note.
Here we list the road closures which will be in place in the lead-up to, during and immediately after the Great North Run[7]. The affected roads are in Newcastle[8] from the Central Motorway (A167) route start - close to the bridge by Claremont Place and North Terrace - as well as Gateshead[9] and South Shields[10] and the lists includes temporary road closures as well as links to restrictions in place which all add up to ease pressure along the route.

Runners, as regulars will know, follow the A167 to the Tyne Bridge then follow on to the A184 Park Lane past the Gateshead International Stadium; the A184 Felling Bypass and the A194 Leam Lane - Whitemare Pool - followed by the A1300 John Reid Road; A1300 Prince Edward Road - Harton Nook - and on to Redwell Lane then the A183 Coast Road before finishing opposite the site of The Bamburgh[11] pub in South Shields. For more about the route see here[12].
