Drivers are being advised to avoid a stretch of the M60 while work takes place this weekend.

National Highways is carrying out work River Irk bridge near junction 19 (Heaton Park[1]) of motorway.

A closure will be in place on the anti-clockwise carriageway between junction 21 and 19 while roadworks are set up.

The road will be shut to traffic[2] between 10pm on Friday, September 12, and 6am on Saturday as a result.

From 6am on Saturday until 9pm on Sunday, there will be a single lane running between Junction 20 and Junction 19, with a 50mph speed limit.

The M60 anti-clockwise will also be shut between Junction 21 and Junction 19 between 9pm on Sunday and 5am on Monday while the roadworks are removed.

A National Highways spokesperson said: "As a result, we expect significant delays the M60[4] anti-clockwise between junction 20 (Blackley[5]) and 19. Avoid this part of the M60

"We're strongly advising you to avoid this section of the M60 and consider using alternative routes.

"If you can't avoid a journey by this route, plan ahead and allow extra time.

Alternately, consider re-timing your trip across the weekend."
