Twins and parents from Thetford killed in Portugal car crash
The tragedy happened on Saturday morning, just hours after the group had rented a car from Faro airport for their holiday in Portugal. Thetford parents Domingos Jos? Fal?
Serrano, 55, and Maria Jo?o Serrano, 51, along with their twin sons Domingos and Afonso, both 20, died when the car they were travelling in was in a collision with another vehicle in Castro Verde, southern Portugal. A Portuguese man, 26, who was driving the other vehicle, also lost his life. He was named locally as Ruben Goncalves, from Almodovar. According to the Municipal Council for Mour?o, the family had been travelling from Faro to Mour?o for their annual holiday when the crash happened on the IP2 motorway near Castro Verde at around 1.40am on Saturday morning.
The Serrano family, who were living in Thetford[1], had hired a Nissan Juke from Faro Airport as they headed for Mour?o, where the parents were originally from. According to the Mour?o authorities, which have declared two days of mourning, they were killed as they travelled north from the Algarve towards Mour?o in the district of Evora, near the Spanish border. In a statement, the Municipal Council of Mour?o said: "In the car there were four occupants of Mour?o nature, and a young woman with ties to the family.
"Residents of England, they were travelling from Faro to Mour?o for their usual and well-deserved vacation. "It is with great sadness that the Municipality announces this information, offering its condolences to the families and friends of the victims." It is understood that all four family members held British passports, and the twin boys were born in the UK.
Mr Serrano is believed to have celebrated his 55th birthday last Thursday, just before flying to Portugal. The young woman who lost her life is understood to be of Polish origin and to also live in Britain.

In a statement posted on the Thetford Town Youth FC Facebook page, the team paid heartfelt tribute to the family. Both of the twins had played for the youth team.
It said: "Thetford Town Football Club would like to pass on our sincere condolences to the Serrano family and the local Portuguese community after the recent tragedy while on holiday. "Afonso and Domingos were both an integral part of our U18 team in recent years. Both brothers sadly passed away in Portugal with their parents and friends in a tragic car accident.
"The loss of this lovely family will leave a massive void in the local community."
