Major motorway is shut down as car bursts into flames to spark huge delays as emergency crews rush to scene

A major motorway was shut down this morning after a car burst into flames, sparking huge delays.

The vehicle caught fire on the M5 southbound carriageway from junction two for the A4123 Wolverhampton Road to junction 3 for the A456 Quinton Expressway today.

Two crews from the West Midlands Fire Service scrambled to the scene just after 10am, and two lanes were sealed from traffic as emergency services dealt with the incident.

No injuries have been reported.

A fire service spokeswoman said: 'We received a call at 10.08am to a car well alight fire on the motorway hard shoulder of the M5.

'We sent two crews, one from Smethwick and one from Haden Cross.

They are still in attendance.'

The third lane remains in operation.

Traffic data monitor Inrix posted: 'Two lanes closed and queueing traffic due to vehicle fire on M5 Southbound.

'From J2 A4123 Wolverhampton Road (Oldbury/Dudley) to J3 A456 Quinton Expressway (Halesowen/Birmingham).'
