Police issue statement on M5 crash

Gloucestershire Constabulary has issued a statement on the incident. A spokesperson for the force said: "The southbound carriageway on the M5 motorway is closed at junction 11 due to a serious collision. "A two-vehicle collision was reported to us at around 3.25pm today (Saturday) and emergency services, including an air ambulance, are in attendance.

"Motorists have also been temporarily held on the northbound carriageway to allow for the air ambulance to land. "Motorists are advised to use alternative routes."

Motorcyclist seriously injured in crash

A motorcyclist has been left with serious injuries after colliding with a lorry on the M5. The collision, which happened just before 3.30pm, happened on the southbound carriageway around junciton 11.

An air ambulance is said to have attended, with an injured male motorbike rider taken to Bristol's Southmead Hospital, reports the Cotswold Journal.

People have been seen standing outside their cars on the M5 motorway as emergency responders deal with a crash situation. Diversions are in place on the M5 motorway north and southbound after the serious collision earlier this afternoon. National Highways said it expects the road to remain closed for a long time without providing an exact estimate.

National Highways publishes diversion route for drivers

National Highways has published a diversion route for drivers heading southbound on the M5.

In a statement, a spokesperson said the stopping of northbound traffic will be in place for a shorter period, while the air ambulance is at the scene. However, the southbound closure will be in place for a longer period of time.

Southbound drivers are being asked to get off the M5 at junction 11 for Gloucester and the Golden Valley Bypass. Northbound drivers are getting off at junction 11A for Gloucester and Cirencester.

The crash happened about a mile north of Junction 11A, with "trapped traffic" - drivers who passed the last exit slip road - who have to wait for the road to clear before they can move on.

National Highways shares statement on motorway closure

A spokesperson for National Highways has confirmed the M5 is closed in both directions. "This is due to a serious collision involving a lorry and motorcycle on the southbound M5," they said.

"Gloucestershire Police and South Western Ambulance Service are on the scene.

Northbound traffic is held whilst Great Western Air Ambulance attend."
