M25 stretch closed due to lorry fire

A section of the M25 where a lorry caught fire is expected to remain closed overnight.

The carriageway was shut in both directions between junction 31 at Thurrock and junction 29 for the A127 after the fire broke out on the anti-clockwise side at about 12:25 BST on Wednesday.

Eight fire appliances were at the scene, including crews from Kent and London.

Essex Police said no injuries were reported.

The clockwise carriageway reopened at about 14:00 BST, but police said the anti-clockwise stretch would remain closed while urgent repairs were made to the road surface and barriers.

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said the blaze produced a particularly large amount of smoke because the lorry was carrying tyres.

It said crews would remain at the scene to extinguish hotspots.

National Highways said the anti-clockwise stretch would be closed until [1]Thursday morning.
