Crash involving lorry and car sees motorway closed for nearly 11 hours

A motorway in Cambridgeshire[1] has reopened after being closed for nearly 11 hours. The M11 first closed at around 5am today[2] (Tuesday, August 26) due to a crash[3] between a lorry and car. The road reopened just before 4pm and severe delays along the road have cleared.

Traffic monitoring site Inrix says: "M11 in both directions re-opened, severe delays cleared, emergency barrier repairs complete and earlier accident from J11 A10 (Cambridge South / Harston) to J12 (Cambridge). "Previous congestion to Local roads surrounding both junctions, especially Trumpington road into and out of Cambridge." Emergency services, including Cambridgeshire[4] Police and the East of England Ambulance Service, were called to the incident earlier today. Three people were injured in the crash, including one who sustained serious injuries[5].

An ambulance spokesperson said: "We were called just before 4.50am to a road traffic collision on the northbound M11 between junctions 11 and 12. We sent multiple vehicles, including four ambulances, a vehicle from the Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) and a response car from Essex and Hertfordshire Air Ambulance. "Three patients, including one who had sustained serious injuries, were transported by road to Addenbrooke's Hospital for further treatment." Diversions were in place[6] during the repair roadworks.
