Car bursts into flames on Glasgow motorway as drivers stuck in queues

A car burst into flames[1] on a Glasgow motorway[2] this evening (August 22) as drivers were stuck in long tailbacks. Video from the scene shows a Mini well alight on the hard shoulder as traffic snakes slowly past the scene on the southbound carriageway. The incident occurred after 8pm on Friday (22) evening close to Newton Mearns, between junctions four and five.
The front end of the car is shown engulfed in flames in the video, with the engine apparently ablaze. An eye-witness told Glasgow Live that traffic was backed-up behind the blaze on the M77, as they urged drivers to avoid the route.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed multiple calls had been made to report a car on fire on the hard shoulder on the M77 southbound between junctions 4 and 5 around 8.21pm. Two fire engines attended and the fire was extinguished.
Firefighters left the scene, with the matter left with Police Scotland. Glasgow Live has approached Police Scotland for more details. Sign up to our daily Glasgow Live newsletter here[3] to receive news and features direct to your inbox.
