UK Warehousing Association, First Scotland Warehousing Lunch

As part of its drive to build the warehousing community and engage with the devolved nations, leading trade body the UK Warehousing Association (UKWA) has hosted a specially convened Scotland Warehousing Lunch in Glasgow, attended by Brian Whittle MSP along with senior representatives from Scottish companies within the sector, including Trespass, Rhino Express, Wincanton and Bullet Express. Commenting on behalf of UKWA, Chief Executive Clare Bottle said: "Scotland is an important location for warehousing with very specific challenges. Savills has reported a serious undersupply of space, particularly good quality buildings over 100,000 sq ft, against a background of rising demand.
To be effective as the voice of warehousing in Scotland, it is essential that we first listen to direct experiences of companies operating in the country and engage with those influencing policy to help effect change. I am delighted to have had the opportunity to consult with Scottish businesses at this first Scotland Warehousing Lunch, particularly with a proactive MSP like Brian Whittle, MSP for South Scotland (Region)." According to Savills, take up of warehousing space in 2024 increased by 90% over levels seen in 2023, but barriers continue to exist for would-be entrants into the market and vacancy remains at a record low.
Other issues for Scotland include power requirements and rising levels of obsolete stock that cannot accommodate modern occupier requirements. In common with the warehousing sector in England, Scottish businesses face a range of challenges, from adoption of technology and innovation readiness to skills gaps, grid connection waiting times and high electricity prices. Speaking at the event, Brian Whittle MSP stressed the importance of businesses coming together to discuss common issues, and expressed his strong support for UKWA's initiative in Scotland.
Clare concludes, "UKWA is keen to build its network in Scotland and offer increased support in helping warehousing businesses communicate and combat the nation's unique challenges as well as those shared across the UK."
