A sinkhole opened up on a busy main road near the M60[1] on Thursday (July 10), with lanes closed and the council called out to assess the damage.

The hole began to crumble on the A34 (Kingsway), at the junction near to the motorway slip road and the A560 for Gatley.

Dashcam footage taken on Thursday showed the road surface caving in on the middle lane of the southbound carriageway towards Cheadle[2].

Stockport[4] Council said engineers were called out to assess the area and closed one lane, with temporary traffic measures also put in place.

A statement said: "We're aware of a sinkhole that's appeared on the A34 between the M60 J2 off-slip and the A560 Gatley traffic lights.

"Engineers are on their way to assess the area and make it safe. In the meantime, one lane will be closed and temporary traffic management is being put in place.

"It's likely to be busier than usual this evening, so please allow extra time or plan an alternative route if you can."
