See Great North 10k in action as thousands take part in huge annual run

It was a fitting finale to a weekend of action as thousands of people, watched by thousands more, took part in the Great North 10k. The annual event kicked off on the Central Motorway in Newcastle[1] on Sunday morning -[2] the same spot as the main Great North Run[3] itself - and similarly crossed the iconic Tyne Bridge[4] into Gateshead[5]. But the Great North 10k[6] runners then return over the bridge[7] to finish on the Town Moor.

As previously reported[8], city centre roads along the route were closed for the occasion and they were lined by crowds of spectators cheering on the runners. Among those in action were fund-raisers, running for charity, and others out to clock up personal achievements. And they included a wedding party having fun along the way.

Great North Run founder Sir Brendan Foster was there to support the event which followed on from Saturday's family run which was organised by Newcastle United Foundation and took place around Leazes Park and St James' Park. As with that, there was a great turn out on Sunday with plenty more support from watching family and friends. And there were some welcome sprays of water to help them cool down along the way.

There were scenes of celebration at the finish line as the runners completed the 10k on the Town Moor with big smiles and no doubt a huge sense of achievement.
