Narrow escape for Cumbrian tipper driver after hitting power lines

The collision caused scorch marks on the ground (pictured) from the electrical current, but the driver was not injured. The incident has prompted power network operator Electricity North West to issue an urgent warning to truck and tractor drivers to take additional care when working around power lines and to "look out and look up". Paul Killilea, Electricity North West asset and investment director, said: "This could have been very different, and the driver is very lucky to be alive.

"This is a very serious incident, the scorch marks left just shows how powerful the current from the electricity is. "This should be a warning to everyone who drives large vehicles, whether that be HGV tippers or tractors, to look out and look up. "You must be aware of your surroundings and by being aware and switched on, these sorts of incidents can be avoided."

Engineers attended the scene, made it safe and completed repairs. Electricity North West is warning drivers of large vehicles and the general public to stay extra vigilant around power lines. Killilea said: "I can't stress enough that people must take note of our yellow 'danger of death' signs on our electricity poles, pylons and substations.

"Keep an eye on your surroundings and most of all, stay clear of the power network."

The company urges anyone who sees something hazardous near electrical equipment to call 105 immediately.
