Malta secures €12.35 million for second phase of freeport shore power project

Malta has secured EUR12.35 million in EU funding for the second phase of the onshore power supply project at the Malta Freeport, a statement announced on Saturday.  Led by the Economy Ministry with the Malta Free Port Corporation, the project is among just four proposals approved out of 20 projects submitted by EU member states, following a competitive selection process under the European Commission's Connecting Europe Facility Transport Call. The total investment in this phase is estimated to amount to EUR18.4 million, with the EU financing a grant of EUR12.35 million for the project.

The project will see high-voltage shore power connections installed along South Quay Terminal 2 and West Quay Terminal 1, enabling docked vessels to shut down their auxiliary engines and reduce their emissions. The project is the second phase of the investment being undertaken by the Malta Freeport Corporation. The first phase focuses on providing an onshore power supply to vessels within the Freeport, specifically vessels berthed at North Quay Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.

This is the fourth onshore power supply project that Malta is undertaking.

Two onshore power supply projects focus on the TEN-T Core Port of the Grand Harbour, whilst two projects will be implemented within the Malta Freeport, which is located within the TEN-T Core Port of Marsaxlokk.
