Major emergency response after HGV overturns in Blackburn

Emergency[1] services were called to the scene at 1pm after the lorry had overturned at the junction with Brownhill Drive, with motorists having to use Emerald Avenue as a diversion. Drivers were advised to avoid the area as emergency services carried out their investigations. Five fire[2] engines and several specialist appliances, including the Urban Search and Rescue and Hazard Materials, were provided by Lancashire Fire and Rescue and remained at the scene for two hours.

As well as getting the lorry back on its wheels, emergency services also had to clear up a large spill of diesel fuel in the roads, and clear up the lorry's load which had fallen into the road. A Lancashire Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: "On arrival, fire service personnel dealt with an overturned articulated lorry and a large diesel spillage using an environmental grab pack and hazardous materials unit. "Lancashire Police and several other agencies were also in attendance. Fire service crews remained on the scene for approximately two hours."

Lancashire Constabulary also confirmed that the driver of the HGV suffered minor injuries.

It took three recovery vehicles to pull the vehicle back onto its wheels, but in doing so, it lost its shed load, requiring a further clean-up operation.

Emergency services are continuing to make the area safe.
