M62 traffic LIVE: Huge queues back up for miles after horror crash

Chaos has ensued for drivers as three lanes on a major motorway[1] have been shut due to a collision, with police in attendance after a vehicle overturned. Two lanes on the M62, near Huddersfield, closed after a vehicle overturned during the crash. Local drivers have been warned to expect delays as there are 4.5 miles congestion on approach to the crash site[2].

Lanes one and two west between between J24 and J23 are currently shut, as well as lane three eastbound between J23 and J24. This is a live blog. Please follow below for updates...

Traffic not expected to return to normal for nearly two hours

While the incident is expected to clear by around 5.30pm today, Traffic England says, roads aren't expected to return to normal until some time after.

The organisation predicts: "Normal traffic conditions are expected between 18:15 and 18:30 on 11 July 2025."

Drivers stuck in near-30C heat

Drivers have been stuck in baking temperatures this afternoon, with the mercury rising to 28C in Huddersfield.

Delays of up to 30 minutes expected westbound

National Highways has shared another update. "All lanes are open on the #M62[3] eastbound, however 1 lane remains closed westbound between J24 and J23 near #Huddersfield[4] following the collision and centra reservation barrier damage. Delays in excess of 30 minutes westbound, approx.

6 miles of slow moving traffic", the agency said.

Emergency services on the scene

National Highways reported that members of the emergency services and traffic officers are on the scene. In a tweet, the agency said: "Lanes 1 & 2 are closed on the #M62 west between J24 and J23 near #Huddersfield due to a collision involving an overturned vehicle.Emergency services & Traffic Officers on scene.There are 4.5 miles congestion on approach causing 45 mins delays above normal journey time."

Damage to the motorway

National Highways confirmed the road collision damaged a part of the motorway. The organisation said: "There is central reservation barrier damage from the earlier collision."

Earlier, Natioanl Highways Yorkshire said: "Emergency services & Traffic Officers on scene."

Drivers travelling eastbound also face delays

Although two westbound lanes have been shut, an eastbound lane has also been closed. National Highways Yorkshire said delays around 15 minutes are expected for people travelling east on the M62 near Huddersfield.

Traffic expected to last for several hours

The miles long queues on the M62 are expected to clear up between 4pm and 4.15pm today. Normal traffic conditions are expected between 5pm and 5.15pm later today.

Nationl Highways Yorkshire said it has closed a thrid lane, on lane thee eastbound between J23 and J24.

The organisation said: "50 min delays westbound and 15 mins eastbound."
