M60 traffic updates LIVE: Huge delays on motorway as police and fire crew rush to busy stretch

A major motorway has been plagued with significant delays this evening thanks to a massive emergency presence packing several lanes. Fire engines and ambulances have been deployed to the scene of an undisclosed "incident" on the M60 tonight, with the vehicles stopping traffic along the clockwise carriageway at Junction 22 (Failsworth). Emergency response was to teen who 'fell down a manhole'

We've now heard back from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS), a spokesperson has confirmed the service was responding to an incident in which a teenage boy fell down a manhole cover and sustained "non life-threatening injuries". A spokesperson said: "Shortly after 6:31pm this evening , two fire engines from Hollins and Ashton Under Lyne fire stations alongside the Hydraulic Platform from Oldham and the Enhanced Rescue Unit from Leigh attended an incident on the M60 between Junctions 22 and 21. "The incident involved a 13-year-old male who had fallen into a manhole and sustained none-life threatening injuries.

He self-extricated from the manhole before crews arrived. Firefighters used rope rescue equipment and a stretcher to safely bring the male down the embankment and transferred him into the care of North West Ambulance Service. "Firefighters were in attendance for around one hour and ten minutes."

Incident comes days after J27 smash

Today's incident follows another from a few days ago during which two vehicles crashed, causing massive tailbacks and up to 90 minutes of delays.

The earlier crash, which occurred on Wednesday, saw National Highways warn that delays had hit up to 90 minutes following a crash on the clockwise carriageway at Junction 27. The smash also caused delays to the local Bee bus network, affecting the 201, 202, 322, 327, 330 and 383 services. Greater Manchester Police confirmed there were "minor injuries" reported following the incident.

Emergency presence not expected to clear for up to 90 minutes

The emergency presence on the M60 this evening is not expected to clear for at least another hour, according to Highways England.

The service has provided a 9.45pm to 10pm window for when the traffic will likely clear, and the same window for when "normal conditions" will resume on the motorway.

Incident first reported after 6pm

According to the AA's own traffic monitoring, the incident was first reported at 6.03pm, meaning traffic has been backing up on the M60 for the last two hours.

One lane closed following response

According to traffic data company Inrix, one lane has closed this evening due to a "police incident".

The firm, said: "One lane closed due to police incident on M60 clockwise at J22 (Failsworth)."
