M60 traffic RECAP: Man dies in horror crash as Oasis fans stuck in huge queues

Oasis fans were issued a travel warning after a collision on the M60 left a man dead and the road closed for several hours. Cars were stranded in a major traffic jam following the crash and fans of the band were spotted walking up the hard shoulder. The motorway between J19 for Middleton and J22 for Chadderton was closed in both directions.

Greater Manchester Police said: "There was a significant incident on the M60 on Sunday night, which caused a closure between J19 and J21 and severe delays." A large number of resources were sent to try and minimise disruption after the fatal incident. Our live blog has now ended.

Taffic has been released

While the taffic has been released the road remains closed. In a statement this morning Greater Manchester Police said: "There was a significant incident on the M60 on Sunday night, which caused a closure between J19 and J21 and severe delays.

National Highways has confirmed Traffic Officers and contractors are in attendance and assisting with traffic management.

They added: "All traffic caught in the closure has been released."

Roads 'heavily impacted', police warn

Roads near the M60 could be gridlocked following the Oasis gig tonight. "Due to an ongoing police incident the M60 is closed from junction 22 to junction 19. Additionally, A664 Rochdale Road is closed in both directions over the M60," a police statement read.

"Roads in the surrounding area are likely to be heavily impacted by congestion. Road users and bus services may experience severe delays. "For fans travelling to Heaton Park for the Oasis concert please exit the M60 anti-clock wise at junction 21 and if you are traveling clock-wise exit the M60 at junction 17."

Motorway still faces HOURS of closures

National Highways has said the M60 will remain closed for several hours after the fatal incident tonight.

There are currently delays of 45 minutes, with the motorway closed in both directions.

"The M60 in Greater Manchester is closed in both directions, clockwise between J19 Rhodes Interchange (Middleton, Manchester (Cen) A576) and J21 Broadway Interchange (Chadderton A663). Anti-clockwise is closed between J22 Holinwood Interchange (Oldham, Failsworth A62) and J19," National Highways said. The clockwise diversion is as follows:

  • Leave M60 clockwise at Jct 19
  • At M60 Jct 19/A576 Rbt, take third exit onto A576 southbound
  • At A576/A6104 Jct, turn left onto A6104 eastbound
  • At A6104/A663 Jct, turn left onto A663 northbound
  • At A663/M60 Jct 21 clockwise entry slip road Jct, turn right and rejoin M60 clockwise.

The anti-clokwise diversion is as follows:

  • Leave M60 anti-clockwise at Jct 22
  • At M60 Jct 22/A62 Jct, continue straight ahead onto A6104 westbound
  • At A6104/Semple Way Jct, turn right onto Semple Way northbound
  • At Semple Way/A663 Jct, turn left onto the A663 southbound (diversion route symbol changes to solid square)
  • At A663/A6104 Jct, turn right onto the A6104 westbound
  • At A6104/A576 Jct, turn right onto the A576 northbound

Fans of Oasis have been spotted walking up the hard shoulder. National Highways said a "large number of pedestrians who have left their vehicles and are walking up the hard shoulder". The Manchester Evening News said people wearing Oasis merchandise were along those walking along the motorway.

Delays expected to continue throughout the evening

National Highways said it expected the M60 to remain closed throughout the evening following the incident. A statement from the body said: "The M60 in Greater Manchester is closed in both directions between J19 Rhodes Interchange (Middleton, Manchester (Cen) A576) and J21 Broadway Interchange (Chadderton A663). "This is due to a serious incident which has occurred within the J20 Alkrington Interchange (Blackley, Moston A664)

"Greater Manchester Police are leading the response to the incident and it is expected the road will be closed for a protracted period. "North West Ambulance Service have also attended the incident. National Highways Traffic Officers are in attendance and assisting with traffic management."

Oasis fans warned in statement

Oasis fans have been warned in a statement by the Bee Network, the transport network for Greater Manchester.

The authority said: "Due to a serious road traffic collision on the M60 J20.

Part of the motorway is currently closed causing significant delays on roads in the area.

This may impact your journey to Heaton Park for the Oasis concert."
