M60 closure UPDATES as ‘police incident’ sees traffic hit by delays and diversions

Emergency services rushed to the M60 this morning after a "police incident" forced a section of the motorway to shut. The M60 anti-clockwise was closed between J12 M602 and J10 Trafford Park, in Manchester, and the clockwise carriageway between J10 and J11 was also shut. National Highways said cops were at the M60 at around 7am this morning for an "ongoing police incident".

The motorway has reopened following the closure this morning.

National Highways said: "No significant delays are reported in the area."

Drivers told to plan ahead or re-route

National Highways has warned drievrs of the delays they could face with this morning's M60 closure. The oraganisation said: "If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey."

Diversion route were also shared so drievrs can avoid long queues approching the scene.

Firefighters at the scene

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said firefighters were called to the M60 this morning to assist cops. In a statement, they said: "At around 7.30am on Sunday, July 27, our crews were called to assist Greater Manchester Police with an incident on the M60 anticlockwise between junctions 10 and 11. "Fire crews remain at the scene."

Clockwise diversion in place

National Highways has set up diversions for the M60 clockwise closure.

Drivers should following the solid square symbols for this route.

  • Exit the M60 clockwise at J9 and at the Lostock Circle take the 3rd exit onto the A5081
  • Continue to the next roundabout, Parkway Circle, with the A576 and take the 1st exit onto the A576 northbound
  • Continue on the A576 for approximately 2 miles to reach the M602 J2 Gilda Brook Roundabout
  • Take the 1st exit onto the M602 westbound and continue to the next junction to re-join the M60.

Anti-clockwise diversion in place

National Highways said traffic from the anti-clockwise section of the M60 was being diverted vis thr hallow circle symbol on road signs.

  • Exit the M60 anti-clockwise at J12 and keep left to join the M602 eastbound
  • Exit the M602 at the next junction and take the 3rd exit at the roundabout onto the A576 southbound
  • Remain on the A576 for approximately 2 miles to the Parkway Circle with the A5081 at Trafford Park
  • Take the 3rd exit onto the A5081 towards Mossfield/The Trafford Centre
  • Remain on the A5081 to reach Lostock Circle and rejoin the M60 at J9

Motorway closed in both directions

Police have shut the M60 in both directions between Eccles and the Trafford Centre. The anti-clockwise carriage has shut between J12 (M602) and J10 (Trafford Park) anti-clockwise and between J10 and J11 (Eccles) clockwise.

'Ongoing police incident'

National Highways revealed the M60 was closed due to a 'police incident' which was still 'ongoing'. In a statement, National Highways said: "At around 07:00 this morning ,27/07, National Highways Traffic Officers were dispatched to assist Greater Manchester Police with a closure of the M60 anti-clockwise.

"At around 09:00 the clockwise carriageway was closed at J10 to support the ongoing police incident." It is currently not clear what the incident is.

A National Highways North West spokesperson wrote on X: "The M60 anti-clockwise is closed between J12 M602 and J10 Trafford Park for a police incident. Diversion via 'Hollow Circle'."

The section of the M60 clockwise carriageway between J10 and J11 was then also shut, with drivers expceted to be hit with long delays.
