Police during Wednesday's operation

More than 50 truckers were stopped on the M6 in a police crackdown that saw three arrests and dozens of drivers in trouble. And senior officers have branded the blitz on the Staffordshire-leg of the motorway an 'effective day'.

Meanwhile the crackdown also saw three arrests being made as Staffordshire Police teamed up with West Midlands Police and the Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). Wednesday's sting came as part of the national Operation Spotlight where officers are focusing on the 'fatal four' - driving under the influence, not wearing a seat belt, speeding, and using a mobile phone while behind the wheel.

Today and Staffordshire Police's road crime team have released the resulted of the blitz on the M6.

Based at the hub in Doxey, officers stopped 54 trucks - where out of those 13 drivers were stopped from going any further for 'various offences' with 12 others reported.

Meanwhile 14 were given 'verbal advice' and two reported to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). One vehicle was seized after it transpired the driver had no licence.

Elsewhere and 16 M6 motorists were reported for various traffic offences, three vehicles found to be in a dangerous state and one stolen vehicle identified. Three drivers were also arrested on suspicion of offences such as failing to stop, dangerous driving, driving without a licence and insurance, and driving while under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

Inspector Chris Moss, of the force's road crime team, said: "This was an effective day of action focussing on the M6 corridor with colleagues from across the border, aimed at targeting those who put themselves and others at risk while driving carelessly or in breach of regulations.

I am pleased that we were able to stop so many drivers suspected of multiple road traffic offences and that we were able to work with partners to get these dangerous vehicles and irresponsible drivers off our roads."
