M5 lorry fire causing long delays in West Country

A lorry fire on the M5 in the West Country is causing delays for motorists this morning (Thursday, July 24). The blaze erupted on the northbound carriageway near Bridgwater in Somerset. Holidaymakers were caught in hold-ups[1] of around 45 minutes due to the incident.
It happened on the entry slip road with one lane being closed earlier in the morning. National Highways had warned motorists of the delays, saying earlier: "Lane 1 (of 3) is closed on the M5 northbound between J24 (Bridgwater) and J23 (Taunton) due to a vehicle fire. @AvonFireRescue remain working on scene. Delays of at least 45 minutes approaching."
The latest from traffic and travel site Inrix at 11.40am was: "M5 Northbound entry slip road partially blocked, queueing traffic due to lorry fire at J24 A38 Taunton Road (Bridgwater South). Travel time is 20 minutes. The fire is out at the end of the slip."
Traffic cameras show long tailbacks on the northbound carriageway.
Emergency services have been contacted for further information.
Elsewhere on the M5, there was reported to be no fuel available at the normal pumps at the northbound Michaelwood Services in South Gloucestershire near the border with Gloucestershire.
