M25 and M26 LIVE: Traffic chaos as woman rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries

Drivers are facing delays following the closure of both the M25 and M26 after emergency services raced to help a woman, who has suffered life-threatening injuries. The M25 was closed anti-clockwise between Junction 6, at Godstone, and J5, at Sevenoaks shortly after 6pm this evening. National Highways confirmed Surrey Police are still at the scene.

It comes at motorists have also been hit with a closure on the M26. A National Highways spokesperson said: "The M25 is now CLOSED anti-clockwise between J6 (Godstone) and J5 (Sevenoaks) due to a police-led incident. Surrey Police are working on scene.

M25 open again after police incident

The National Highways has confirmed that the M25 is open again following the earlier police incident.

In a tweet, the agency announced that police had given the green light for the motorway to re-open.

Woman in hospital with 'life-threatening injuries'

Surrey Police have confirmed a woman is in a critical condition following an accident which closed two motorways.

The woman, aged in her 40s, was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries following a concern for welfare incident on the M25. The force also said an air ambulance was called to the motorway.

Police statement on M25 closure

Surrey Police have released a statement following today's M25 closure. It read: "Just after 5.30pm police were called following a report of a concern for safety on the clockwise carriageway of the M25 between junction 5 and 6.

"The road was closed in both directions whilst officers and an air ambulance attended the scene. "A woman in her 40s has been taken to hospital with life threatening injuries. Her next of kin have been made aware.

"Thank you for your patience whilst we responded to this incident."

Inrix's latest report

Inrix, the traffic data specialists, have issued a report on the motorway chaos. "All traffic being temporarily held and queueing traffic due to accident on M6 Northbound at J10 A454 Black Country Route (Wolverhampton / Walsall). "Queueing traffic due to earlier accident on M6 Northbound from J11 A460 (Cannock) to J12 A5 Watling Street (Gailey).

"Delays on M6 Southbound before J8 M5 coming from the M54. Travel time is 80 minutes."

Other areas impacted

Severe traffic has also built up on three parts of the M6 in the last few hours. Queues formed on the northbound between Junction 11, Cannock and Junction 12.

There is 80 minutes of congestion backed up southbound before Junction 8 of the M5.

Drivers have also reported severe delays at Junction 11.
