Live: M4 closed due to major power-line emergency

The M4 was closed in both directions[1] this evening due to emergency work being carried out on power lines above the carriageway. Traffic was halted in both directions between junctions 18 and 19. The road had reopened by around 8.45pm but there remained congestion and queuing traffic as the backlog of vehicles cleared.
Traffic and travel monitoring service Inrix reported that powerlines had somehow been "damaged". It is not clear whether the powerlines were damaged or needed urgent maintenance. National Highways said that the M4 in South Gloucestershire was closed in both directions[2] between Junction 18 (Bath) and Junction 19 (M32) for National Grid emergency works to an overhead power line.
National Grid engineers carried out the repairs.
