Eight people including two children taken to hospital after M6 crash

The motorway remains closed following the crash at 10.30am

Eight people, including two children, have been taken to hospital following a major crash on the M6[1].
Emergency services and the air ambulance were called to the southbound near Lancaster at 10.27am today after a smash involving several vehicles. The southbound carriageway remains closed this evening between junctions 33 and Lancaster Forton services with long delays in the area.[2][3]
The third lane of the northbound carriageway has also been closed due to damage on the central reservation. National Highways is reporting delays of more than two hours on the southbound carriageway and one hour northbound.
A diversion is in place using the A6.
In an update posted at 1.30pm Lancashire Police said the southbound carriageway will remain closed 'for some time'. Some motorists have posted on social media saying they have been stuck in traffic 'for three hours'.

Lancashire Constabulary said at 1.30pm: "At 10:27am this morning, we received a report of a multi-vehicle collision, between Junctions 33 and Forton Services on the M6 Southbound. Our officers, and other emergency service colleagues remain at the scene and there are a number of casualties who have been taken to hospital.
"The motorway remains closed between Junction 33 and the services southbound and diversions are in place.
Northbound is open with speed restrictions in place. We anticipate that the southbound motorway will be closed for some time as we and our colleagues continue to respond to the incident.
