Drivers warned over heavy delays and congestion near major UK airport
Drivers have been hit with heavy delays and congestion near a major UK airport after a car collision[1]. The M1 in Bedfordshire is currently closed northbound between J12 near Flitwick and J13 near Milton Keynes due to a collision, with drivers urged to avoid the area.
There are currently roughly 50 minutes of delays against expected traffic. National Highways warned ober the delays on the M1 southbound between junctions J9 and J8 and J12 and J13.[2]
The recommended diversion route directs drivers to follow the Hollow Diamond symbol displayed on road signs, guiding them off the M1 motorway.
Motorists should exit the M1 at Junction 12, taking the slip road onto the A5120 heading northeast toward Westoning.
Upon reaching Westoning, continue along the A5120 until arriving at the roundabout where the A5120 meets Steppingley Road.
At this roundabout, take the second exit onto Steppingley Road. Proceed along Steppingley Road, passing Flitwick Railway Station, before merging onto Fordfield Road.
Drivers should proceed along Fordfield Road until reaching the crossroads with the A507. At this junction, keep to the right to join the A507 Ridgemont bypass.
Continue straight ahead, passing over both the Station Road and Salford Road roundabouts, then merge onto the A421 Bedford Road.
Follow the A421 until you reach Junction 13, where you can re-enter the M1 motorway.

The AA warned today: "Severe delays of 65 minutes and delays increasing on M1 Northbound between J11A A5 Dunstable Northern Bypass (Dunstable / Luton North) and J13 A421 Bedford Road (Bedford / Milton Keynes South).
Average speed five mph."
