Motorists could be slapped with fines and three penalty points on their licence[1] for one of the most irksome behaviours on our roads. The police are ramping up efforts to tackle middle lane hogging, a prevalent issue on motorways that occurs daily throughout the nation.
This frequently overlooked traffic rule is often breached by drivers[2] who are unaware of their infraction.
Middle lane hogging involves vehicles remaining in the motorway's central lane when the inside lane is available, reports Birmingham Live[3].
This habit can lead to significant traffic build-up as it forces other drivers to switch to the outer lane to overtake. It's a familiar frustration on UK motorways[4] and ranks high among the top grievances for road users.
While some drivers may be oblivious to their mistake, others stubbornly refuse to shift to the inside lane. Those caught in the act risk facing ?100 fines and accruing three points on their driving record.
