Council probes bin lorry crash that shut Perth road and left driver with ‘minor injuries’

The driver of a bin lorry that crashed in Perth has escaped with "minor injuries". Perth and Kinross Council has launched an investigation after one of its refuse lorries tipped over on Lower Friarton Road. The HGV was performing a right-hand turn when it keeled over at around 1.30pm on Sunday.

Emergency services attended, and the road was shut for around three hours while the lorry was moved.

The male driver of the HGV self-extricated from the vehicle before emergency services arrived. Perth and Kinross Council confirmed his condition was being monitored. A spokesperson for the local authority said: "An eight-wheel refuse vehicle overturned while executing a right-hand turn on Friarton Road at around 1.30pm on Sunday.

"No other vehicles were involved. "Fortunately, our driver escaped with only minor injuries and we are continuing to monitor his condition.

"The road was closed for around three hours while the vehicle was lifted back into position and driven to the lorry park at Friarton.

"An initial motor vehicle accident report has been completed with a further incident report to follow once a fuller investigation is completed."

An eyewitness said:[1] "What looks like one of the large blue Perth and Kinross Council waste lorries has ended up on its side with the garden waste it was carrying now on the grass verge down to the River Tay.

"There were two police cars there, an ambulance, three fire engines, including a heavy rescue unit, and a fire car."
