West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service (WYFRS) were called to the scene at 6.35am this morning, to reports of a large vehicle on fire. A spokesperson for WYFRS said: "We sent three crews to the scene who have extinguished a large goods vehicle using hose reels and breathing apparatus." There are no reports of any injuries.
Traffic had been held within the closure but a spokesperson for National Highways said just before 8.15am that vehicles were being turned around. Those vehicles were passing the scene in lane three and National Highways said in its latest update just before 11am that all traffic caught within the closure had been released. One motorist responded to that post on X though with a picture of standstill traffic and said: "Not moving been here for hours just before jct 24.
A spokesperson for National Highways said recovery of the vehicle's load, which is foodstuffs, was ongoing but taking longer than expected. A recovery truck could be seen heading down the eerily quiet carriageway at 12.25pm on National Highways motorway cameras for the M62 at junction 23. It was also slow on the eastbound carriageway in the area due to on-lookers.
Congestion is now reportedly down to three miles, stretching close to junction 25 (Brighouse), although traffic is queueing through Ripponden.
A diversion is in place via the solid square symbol on the A629 to Halifax, the A58 through Sowerby Bridge then the A672 to re-join at junction 22.
