Smoke billows across M5 after lorry fire near Droitwich

Emergency services were called to the scene between junctions 4 and 5 following reports of a fire. Upon arrival, fire crews found that the driver unit of a lorry was on fire. The ambulance service also attended.

The fire spread onto the trailer and smoke could be seen across both sides of the M5.

Multiple lanes were closed while emergency services dealt with the incident, causing delays of more than 30 minutes. A fire service spokesperson said at the time: "Three Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service crews - two from Bromsgrove and one from Droitwich Fire Stations - plus the water carrier from Evesham were called at 2.22pm on June 17 to a large vehicle on fire on the M5 northbound between junctions 5 and 4.

"The fire involved an HGV with an articulated trailer. "The cab unit was well alight and extinguished using a hosereel jet and compressed air foam system, with fire spreading to the trailer unit containing furniture where the fire is being fought using a triple extension ladder. "Lanes 1, 2 and 3 have been closed.

No casualties have been reported although ambulance are in attendance. Police have been advised." A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "One of our ambulances came across a lorry on fire between junctions 4a and 5 on the M5 at 2.34pm.

"The driver of the lorry was assessed but thankfully was uninjured and able to be discharged at the scene."
