Review of signs planned near low bridge following recent lorry crash

An eyewitness said that the roof and the sides of the lorry were hanging off following the incident involving the railway bridge over Marsh House Lane earlier this month. It is something of a hotspot for strikes, with a number reported over the years. Now, Cllr Sagheer Zaman, the borough councillor for Fairfield and Howley ward, has raised signage issues with Warrington Borough Council.

Following 'urgent concerns', a review is going to take place, with the location given 'priority' status. Cllr Zaman said: "I have met with highways officers from Warrington Borough Council to raise urgent concerns about the poor road signage on Marsh House Lane. "This is especially near the bridge, where large vehicles have occasionally struck due to unclear signs for advance warnings and following non-HGV sat-navs.

"I am pleased to report that officers intend to undertake a review of all signage at all restricted height locations to ensure that signs are correct. "This will also provide the best chance of a driver noticing the warning at a location on the network where an alternative route would be available, to avoid u-turns having to be made to avoid the height restriction. "I was also informed, due to a significant backlog of signage work, the serious nature of this specific location on Marsh House Lane will be given priority attention.

"Improving safety for residents, drivers, and pedestrians remains a top priority, and I will continue to work with the council until this is resolved."
